Okay, so I've decided that the order of the Action Steps I need to take to create my first podcast isn't working for me, so I'm going to take them out of order and just track my progress.
1. Make sure my current hosting package has enough room and a way to FTP mp3 files onto the page.
My current hosting package doesn't have much storage, so I will have to find other alternatives.
2. Investigate other archive options.
I have found some archive options, but my understanding is that they put ads in your podcasts, so I'm not sure I'd want to use them. So I'm still looking into that.
3. Outline my spiritual awakening journey, break it into bite-size pieces
I've done some notes and outlining, but I have a lot still to do.
4. Make a list of books to review
I have four of my top choices picked out. I haven't made a list of others, but I have purchased four other new ones that will probably be next.
5. Investigate how to store my mp3's somewhere besides my computer, so they don't eat up my memory.
Haven't really done this yet.
6. Research blog directories and choose my top 5 to submit to.
Nope, didn't do this one yet.
7. Buy a new laptop.
Done! Love it. :-)

I need to look into that.

That's what I'm working on right now. It's the new OS Windows 7, which doesn't use my Outlook Express email client, so I had to download another one and I haven't gotten it set up yet or learned how to use it.

Buying the laptop and headset.
Last night, I bought my new laptop and my USB headset. I made sure to get a USB because my research said it made for better audio quality, and I also got some with squishy headphones for both comfort and noise cancellation. I made sure also that they had a volume and mute control in the cord. I paid about $30 and got the Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB at Staples. My next step will be to look into that paid podcasting software and see if I want it now or later....

Recording Options
I have two choices for recording my podcasts at this time, with a third to come later.
1. My GoogleVoice phone number allows me to record any call as an mp3, so I can use that with clients, interviews, etc.
2. My partner has a mic and Audacity on her computer, so I can use that until I get my laptop and get the Propaganda software, which allows full editing and publishing, with tags that make it simple to subscribe, track listeners, etc.
I agree with one padcaster who said the audio quality is not nearly as important as the creativity, so I'm not going to worry about getting all techy. I will, however, look into Propaganda (link above) because I love the all-in-one service of that software, and I have a feeling I'm going to fall in love with podcasting and want to automate it as much as possible. :-)

Choosing a name...branding...
Next, according to the pdf report, I needed a name and a theme, to create a brand identity.
So I brainstormed some Podcast names based on my target audience and subject matter:

In investigating audio blogging platforms, I found http://www.blogtalkradio.com/, and I immediately got excited about doing a podcast. I bookmarked the site after creating a rudimentary profile. I may not use them because they put ads in your podcast, which I absolutely do not want. But they were the first platform I found, and they got me excited about the possibilities. I also found http://www.podomatic.com/, which whetted my appetite further. My research has since revealed plenty of other choices.
To get the lowdown on how to make the most of podcasting for business, I read "How to Say It: Marketing with New Media" by Lena Claxton and Alison Woo. One part of their 4-part Social Media Strategy is podcasting, so it was very helpful. I got more advice from "The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur" by Mike Michalowicz and Duct Tape Marketing by John Jantsch. Awesome books, all!
Then I did a search on "how to do a podcast" and found (among many others) these most helpful articles:

This one recommended a good headset and the software Audacity for editing. I've used Audacity before, to record stories I've written onto CD for customers in another little side business I have, and my partner uses it to do her online French assignments for school, so I was familiar with it and glad to see it rec'd. It's free and relatively easy to learn and use.
It also recommended this site: http://www.flashkit.com/loops/ to get music loops to add to your podcast to jazz it up. I also know another source, http://www.royaltyfreemusiclibrary.com/. I think that would be really fun and I plan to use it.

Having researched other podcasting software, I realized $50 for a full-service solution was a good deal. I'll happily pay for convenience, as long as it's reliable and the price reasonable. I've already made several hundred dollars with my audio stories, and I could make more if it was easier to do, so it would pay for itself immediately! So I bookmarked it to come back to once I get my new laptop, since my computer just crashed a few days ago.
